With the highly anticipated opening of the community theatre in the Mall of the Emirates around the corner and plans afoot for a Creek side opera house, the future of Dubai as a cultural destination is looking up. For now, things are still moving slowly, but that doesn’t mean the city is bereft of activities. Philipp Maier is the driving force behind the Dubai Philharmonia – an ensemble of 20 musicians who will play an eclectic mix of pieces that includes the works of Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Grieg and Schubert. The free concert will also include the vocal talents of Jacqui Birkett and Melanie Roberts. Maiers’ ultimate dream is to create a fully professional philharmonic orchestra in the city. Hopefully this will be a successful step in the right direction.
